The Perfect Potatoes Causing Pesticide Drift

Potato Pesticides

“Potato fields may be sprayed with toxic pesticides every five days during the height of the growing season, with the drift easily traveling to neighboring farms, homes and schools.”

The US Department of Agriculture have found over 35 different pesticides that may found in farmed potatoes, including:

  • Six known or probable carcinogens
  • 12 suspected hormone disruptors
  • Seven neurotoxins
  • Six developmental or reproductive toxins
  • Nine honeybee toxins

“Farmworkers and their families are additional victims in this unsustainable cycle of pesticide usage. Data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests that 20,000 farmworkers are poisoned by pesticides each year. The actual number is likely far higher, as many of the workers may not seek medical care or may be misdiagnosed if they do seek treatment.”

Is McDonald’s demand for the perfect potato the driving force behind pesticide use?
