Midtown East Roof Garden
This rooftop garden in Midtown Manhattan features a combined ipe pergola and horizontal fencing that feels like a secret little cabana oasis and also provides both shade and privacy for a seating area. Plantings include spiral junipers, wisteria vines, cherry trees, hydrangeas, and boxwoods in a mix of terra cotta and Corten steel planters. We had a lot of fun designing this garden due to the interesting variety of plants and planters, as well as the extensive vegetable garden we planned for the clients to be able to use. Some of the edibles include lettuces, carrots, squash, eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers. The entire family enjoys going up to the roof to take clippings to use in the family meal, which is a great interactive experience for the children. This garden was featured in a recent New York Times article.
