Our main goals for the re-design of this public courtyard in Battery Park City were to brighten up the space and make it feel more inviting. We softened the fence lines with lush, shade-tolerant cherry laurels, which have the added benefit of being evergreen through the winter months. The white hydrangeas go a long way towards making a dark space feel brighter, as do the bright green shades of ostrich ferns, creeping Jenny, patriot hostas, and Hollywood junipers. Pea gravel pathways, metal edging, and bluestone stepping stones create the sense of three separate outdoor rooms – one for dining, one for seating, and also a BBQ grilling station. The garden is illuminated at night by a combination of pathway lights and dramatic up-lighting.
