This contemporary roof deck in NYC’s TriBeCa neighborhood features wood deck tiles, bamboo roll fencing, fiberglass and ceramic containers for a seamless blend of Asian- contemporary and traditional elements. We installed dark brown bamboo roll fencing in front of an existing ugly metal fence to help camouflage and childproof it. Wood deck tiles are a quick, relatively inexpensive alternative to building a custom deck. Bamboo does amazingly well in containers, which keep the roots in check and the plants under control. Bamboo is also very versatile and thrives equally in sun or shade. It works great as a natural privacy screen on many of our installations. Green stem bamboo is a more common variety of bamboo, but this gold stem bamboo stands out beautifully against the brown tones of the wood fence. We also planted red Japanese maples and azaleas to contribute to the Asian theme of this garden. All of the plants are watered via a drip irrigation system set on an automatic timer. The pots also contain black metal up-lighting fixtures for a dramatic nighttime effect.
