Brooklyn Townhouse: A Contemporary Backyard with a Tin-Roof Pergola

Pergola

This Boerum Hill, Brooklyn backyard features a cedar pergola with a tin roof. The owner of this townhouse is a Texas native, and she missed the sound of rain on the tin roofs there, so this design gave her a little comforting reminder of home. The biggest challenge to designing this space was figuring out how to combine so many different elements in a way that still felt very contemporary and streamlined. We chose larger pieces of bluestone for the patio to help make the space feel bigger and more customized.  We kept the patio stones and the boards in the fence all very evenly spaced and used repetition throughout to create a sense of rhythm and flow for a cohesive, uncluttered effect. The contemporary outdoor furniture is from Restoration Hardware and Room and Board.  Plantings are a lush mix of grasses, cherry trees, bamboo, roses, trumpet vines, variegated irises, hydrangeas, and sky pencil hollies.
